John Lennon has always been my favorite Beatle for as long as I can remember. I never got to see the Beatles on Ed Sullivan or remembering where I was when John Lennon was shot. So, being deprived of these things and also being a big fan of John(and the Beatles), I finally convinced my parents we should visit Strawberry Fields in Central Park. The first time I went there was in January of 2001 on the "World Day of Peace"(How appropriate!) It was cold and chilly and there was snow all over the place. I brought a poem about John with me and placed it next to the mosaic. We took a few pictures and then left. But that was not the last time I went to Central Park.
I went there once again during April Vacation, only this time it was nicer out and there was no snow. This time I had brought a picture of John I had drawn. He was sitting at his piano singing Imagine, with the inscription "Imagine" John Lennon 1940-1980. There were very few people at the mosaic, so I quickly placed the picture under a tulip stem. The bottom half kept blowing up, so me and my mom went looking for a rock to keep it down. As I went on my "rock search", I glanced over to see if it was still there. I noticed a man who had bent down to read what my picture said, then he fixed the drawing so it could be easily read and not blow away, and then to my suprise, he took a picture of the drawing!!! After he went away, a group of people showed up and also read and took a picture of my drawing. Then a couple showed up and did the same thing! In a matter of five minutes there was a bunch of people swarming over this drawing.
I couldn't believe my eyes! I didn't place it there for attention, I placed it there in memory of John Lennon. I left the park that day with this feeling of greatness, that something so simple and so nice could draw so much attention. It made its point and John's point-"Imagine all the people living life in peace."
John Lennon will never be forgotten! He was a "working class hero".
