James Paul McCartney was born on June 18, 1942 to James and Mary McCartney. Paul grew up in a musical family. His father once was the leader of Jim Mac's Jazz Band. Paul's mother, a nurse, died of breast cancer in 1956.
Paul met John Lennon in June 1957 at a garden fest at St. Peter's where John was playing in his skiffle band, The Quarry Men. Paul immediately impressed John from not only his ability to play "Be-Bop-A-Lulu", but also with his ability to tune a guitar. Two weeks later Paul became a Quarry Man. Later it was Paul who introduced a young friend of his, George Harrison, to John. George soon joined the band. Later they changed their name to "The Beatles".
During the next few years, Paul and The Beatles worked hard perfecting their sound. Paul and John formed a song writing team with an agreement that whatever song they wrote during The Beatle years would be penned, Lennon/McCartney. The Beatles got their big break in 1962 when Brian Epstein became their manager and got them a recording contract with EMI. It was at EMI where they met George Martin who became their producer. Paul and George Martin worked very well together and they continued to work together from time to time during Paul's solo career. Paul married Linda Eastman in early 1969 shortly after John Lennon married Yoko Ono.
During the late 1960's The Beatles were stagnant. It was during this time rumor had it that Paul was dead. There were clues supporting this rumor through pictures on album covers, playing certain parts of songs backwards, etc. It was Paul who made the official announcement about leaving The Beatles in 1970. He released his first solo album, "McCartney" at the same time The Beatles released their last album, "Let It Be". There were a lot of business disputes during this time. Paul ended up suing the other three Beatles which cause a lot of ill feelings.. especially with Lennon.
After The Beatles broke up in 1970, Paul began his solo career which has lasted for decades. He began by doing a couple solo albums, but really missed the concept of having a band and touring. Paul formed Wings in 1971 and actually recorded with them longer than he had recorded with The Beatles. Paul continued to release both solo albums and albums with other various musicians. He also continued to tour up through the 1990's. He always had his wife, Linda, with him in his band. Linda McCartney died on April 17, 1998 from breast cancer.
