John Winston Lennon was born on October 9, 1940 to Alfred "Freddie" and Julia Lennon . At an early age he was introduced to music by learning to play the banjo. As he grew into a young teenager he fell in love with Rock 'N Roll and learned to play the guitar. He soon formed a small skiffle band called the Quarry Men. It was in 1957 when the sixteen John met fifteen year old Paul McCartney. Paul was invited to join the band and from then on their friendship grew. Soon after, Paul introduce George Harrison to John, and George joined the band. They went through a series of name changes before they finally settled on 'The Beatles'.
In the early 1960's, John continued striving to make it big with The Beatles. They traveled to Hamburg, Germany where they played for hours on end in reckless abandon. They were the local favorites at The Cavern Club where Brian Epstein heard them for the first time and became their manager. John and Paul spent hours together writing music and they formed a song writing partnership. All of their songs were penned 'Lennon/McCartney' throughout their Beatle years even though they wrote most of their songs individually.
In August 1962 John married his long-time girlfriend, Cynthia, who was pregnant with their son, Julian. The Beatles big break came during that same year when Brian Epstein got them a recording contract at EMI and they recorded their first album entitled, "Please, Please Me". From there John recorded with The Beatles up until 1970, when they officially broke up. During this short period of time, John not only changed drastically in his physical appearance, but his music changed as well. His songs became very personal and much more complex than the Rock 'N Roll he grew up with. He divorced Cynthia and married Yoko Ono on March 20, 1969.
After The Beatles officially broke up in 1970, Lennon's early solo career began with the Plastic Ono Band. John and Yoko became very political in not only their music, but also their political campaigns and demonstrations. They temporarily separated in 1974 with John moving to California. John referred to this period of time as his "Lost Weekend". Soon after John and Yoko got back together, they had a son, Sean.
When Sean was born in 1975, John retired from the music scene. He wanted to stay at home and raise Sean..... something he had never done with Julian. John stayed away from the recording studio until 1980, after Sean turned five years old. In 1980 John made his return to music and recorded "Double Fantasy" with Yoko. After "Double Fantasy" was released, John and Yoko were working on recording another album. It was during the late evening of December 8, 1980, when going back to the Dakota from the recording studio, John Lennon was assassinated by a deranged fan.
